Abstract
The research internship was conducted in the Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB), located in Los Baños, Laguna from August 2015 to June 2016. The student was involved in two breeding programs: disease resistance for bacterial wilt in bitter gourd and Namamarako disease in the same crop in order to obtain a first-hand experience in the conduct of disease resistance screening for the said diseases. Activities such as inoculation of seedlings, rating based on approved rating scales, controlled pollination of selected plants and maintenance of pedigree seed record were conducted by the student. During the internship, the student also encountered and identified problems in the disease screening and has given some recommendations based on the encountered problems.
