Abstract

This thesis aims to present a critical analysis to the groundwork of Leo Tolstoy's theory on art through the attempt of applying it in a certain medium, particularly in the music of Gloc9. art as a means to communicate. Tolstoy uses functionalism in defining an activity, believing that the function of art is to communicate feelings and experiences. Second is his example of folk art as the kind of art that can be considered genuine. There are three objections raised from Tolstoy's theory. First objection is that art should not only communicate feelings. Second objection is the rejections of Tolstoy's theory to those imagined feelings and experience. Third objection is the impossibility of universalizing a subjective understanding of art. Though Tolstoy's theory on art is applicable to Gloc9's songs its applicability is only limited through the songs' means to communicate and their likeness to folk art as genuine art.
