Abstract

Persuasion can elicit attitudinal and behavioral change necessary for a sustainable management. The study was conducted among Barangay Batong Malake food establishments' owners and employees who have had conversation with the Task Force Kalinisan (TFK) members to explain the influence of the TFK Face-Threatening Act (FTA) strategies towards the compliance of respondents with SWM ordinances. It was found that the FTA strategies employed by the TFK members when delivering the message of SWM ordinances has nothing to do with the respondents' compliance of the laws. They comply because of the strict implementation of the law, the repercussions of violation and some for their personal belief of environmental management. Hence, they were not able to persuade the respondents to follow the ordinances. On the other hand, their strategies resulted to source derogation and some message derogation regarding the ordinances from the respondents. In order to maximize the potential and opportunity of gaining persuasion from the TFK's interpersonal communication with Los Baños stakeholders, it is recommended to learn and be aware of these dynamics as well as the appropriate strategies to employ.
