Abstract

In spite of the increasing tolerance to homosexuals, there are still reported cases of discrimination against them. This study proposes that prejudice against homosexuals is related to religiosity and masculinity. Male members of religious organizations and fraternities recognized by UPLB were randomly selected (n1=38, n2=80). The Index of Attitudes towards Homosexuals, IAH (Hudson and Rickets, 1980) was administered to all respondents. On the other hand, a religiosity scale was distributed to the selected male members of religious organizations while the Sex-Role Egalitarianism Scale, SRES (King & King, 1993) was given to selected members of fraternities. Results of the study revealed that there is no significant difference in the attitudes of the male members of both groups. Furthermore, religiosity and gender-role ideology were found to be significantly correlated with attitudes towards homosexuals. In addition, only three variables were found to be significant in predicting the odds and probability of being homophobic. These are age of the respondent; and religious and masculine characteristics. Members of fraternities embody masculine characteristics and disassociation to persons with non-masculine traits therefore is a normative behavior. On the other hand, Hirschi’s Social Bond Theory (1969) explains that a group member becomes what the group stands for, which includes attachment, commitment and involvement to a group belief.
