Abstract

A study on solvent extraction of Bani (Pongamia pinnata L.) oil was conducted to check its feasibility as an alternative source of oil for biodiesel production. The study include determination of moisture content of the seeds with and without seed coat, selection of suitable solvent among cyclohexane, hexane, and petroleum ether solvents, maximum oil content determination of the seeds, determination of the effects of varying soaking time, seed-to-solvent (w/v) ratio, and temperature one factor at a time on percent oil yield from seeds without seed coat, determination of the composition and physical- chemical properties i.e. specific gravity, iodine value, saponification number, and free

fatty acid value of Bani oil.

Based on the results, moisture content of seeds by wet basis are 11.3530% (with seed coat) and 10.7520% (without seed coat), and 12.8069% (with seed coat) and 12.0473% (without coat) by dry basis. Hexane solvent was selected which yield a maximum oil content of 41.3269% (with seed coat) and 56.2550% (without seed coat) by weight. In the study of effects of varying soaking time, seed-to-solvent (w/v) ratio, and temperature the optimum oil yield by weight was at 8 hrs (22% oil yield), 1:6 ratio (25.00% oil yield), and 35 °C or room temperature (23.67%oil yield), respectively. Thin- Layer Chromatography (TLC) results show that Bani oil is composed of 84.7487% of triglycerides. Analysis of shows that specific gravity of Bani oil is 0.9276 at 25 °C, with iodine value of 56.35 ± 0.77 g I2/100g oil, saponification number of 195.69 ± 0.11 mg KOH/g oil, and a free fatty acid value of 5.41 ± 0.02 mg KOH/g oil.
