Abstract

A major practice on the production and management of coffee (Coffea liberica L.) was conducted at Katy's Farm in Brgy. Tipakan, Lipa City, Batangas from April 23, 2014 to May 23, 2014. Subsequent visits up to first quarter of 2015 were made until all the objectives of the major practice were addressed. The major practice focused on 2-year old Liberica coffee trees which covered 10% (3 ha) of the total area of Katy's Farm. Coffee trees were planted in 3.85m by 4.0 m rectangular layout, and with each tree trained to have three verticals (orthotropic branches). Coffee trees were manually watered during dry months and rain-fed the rest of the year. Weeds were controlled manually, while pest and diseases were primarily controlled using chemical means. Fertilizers were sourced out from organic and inorganic sources, and applied to coffee trees thrice a year. Selective harvesting of red ripe cherries started in September 2014 and ended in March 2015. Coffee cherries were depulped, subjected to flotation test, fermented, washed, sun-dried or air dried, and stored. When there are buyers, dried parchment coffees are brought to a commissioned secondary processor, before selling the roasted and ground coffee (/kg). In 2014, the total cost of the production in the 3-ha farm was ,487.97, inclusive of the tools and equipment, inputs, infrastructures and fixtures, labor and miscellaneous expenses. Revenues came from 521kg processed coffee, valued at ,600.00. The net return was ,112.03, the cost to produce one kilogram of processed coffee was .64, and the return on investment was 1.89.
