Parametric study on solvent extraction of oil from petroleum nut (Pittosporum resiniferum Hemsl.) using cyclohexane as solvent

Abstract

The solvent extraction of petroleum nut oil by soaking method using cyclohexane as solvent was investigated. The petroleum nuts used were without the seed, dried, and size-reduced to an upper limit of 0.5 cm. The effects of the three parameters namely temperature, solvent-to-nut ratio, and soaking time on oil yield were determined. High and low level values were used: 40 °C and 60 °C, 2:1 v/w and 5:1 v/w, and 8 hr and 16 hr, for the temperature, solvent-to-nut ratio, and soaking time, respectively. A centerpoint (50 °C, 3.5:1 v/w, 12 hr) was also set. Three trails were done for each combination of parameters. The factors that had significant effects on oil yield were determined to be solvent-to-nut ratio, interaction of temperature and solvent-to-nut ratio and soaking, and the interactions of the three parameters. The highest oil yield (w/w) was 9.29 ± 0.35 % which was found at 40 °C, 5:1 v/w, 16 hr. Soxhlet extraction was also performed to determine the maximum extractable oil. The condition used was 180 °C, 18:1 v/w, and 12 hr. The result was found to be 22.97%. For comparison, the oil of fresh petroleum nuts was also extracted. Two conditions were performed: 60 °C, 5:1 v/w, 16 hr and 40 °C, 2:1 v/w, 8 hr. The oil obtained were 2.63 ± 0.09% and 1.90 ± 0.42%, respectively. Comparing the physical characteristics, the oil extracted from the fresh have stronger and more distinct odor and darker.
