Abstract

A study has been conducted at San Miguel Yamamura Packaging Corporation Canlubang PET and Caps Plant. The 28g preform's weight is steadily increasing causing additional manufacturing cost. Investigation showed CpK was at 0 if the original control chart was used, process parameters were outdated, its machine, mold and ancillaries had been occurring stoppages due to old age and operators had difficulty understanding control charts and responding to out of control processes. Controllable and experimental factors were identified and solutions were then generated through a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. A Training program was recommended for the operators. a revised process monitoring chart was done, identifying the critical process parameters affecting weight.. Using the design of experiment and response surface methodology, the optimal combinations of the critical process parameters that effect weight were generated. a replacement analysis study on the machine and mold was done which indicated the the length of years the equipment will still be kept for productive use. If the recommended solutions will be implemented, the plant that will save approximately PHP 102,960 per year with no investment costs. If equipment is kept for 18 more years as recommended, an accumulated savings of PHP 1,853, 280 will be realized.
