Abstract

4aUniversal Robina Corporation-BAgong Ilog and cereal Plant produces food products and beverages, particularly, wafer, biscuit chocolate, and coffee. it was observed that 38% of the timer, the contractual workers at the blending area of the white coffee production at the Cereal Plant are unproductive. This results to Php 146, 186.70 worth of unnecessary costs per month. The experimental root causes observed for these unproductive times include the lack of standard times for both batching and cleaning, the lack of a preventive maintenance procedure, and the non-existent centralized batching area. Among the controllable root causes are open doors, workers not at their respective workstations, misalignment of operators' and workers' break times, and the desire of workers to cut blending early early before their shift even ends because a complete blend is not possible. Lastly, limited elevator and the fixed blending time as determined by the Research and Development (R&D) Department comprise the noise root causes. To answer these root causes, manpower is reduced through methods engineering and increasing of workload, as a result of time standardization. A layout change was also proposed. the recommended actions resulted to a 96% reduction in non-essential unproductive times and a cost savings of Php 1,193,079.20 yearly.
