Abstract

The major practice on production and management of onion (Allium cepa L.) was conducted at the Vegetable Crops Division Experimental Production and Demonstration Area, University of the Philippines, Los Baños (UPLB), using three varieties from different seed companies. These varieties are ‘Red Maventa’ from Ramgo International Corporation, ‘RedPinoy’ from East-West Seed Company and ‘Red Hawk’ from Kaneko Seeds. Various practices were performed such as sowing, seedling care, transplanting, irrigation, fertilization, weeding, harvesting, sorting, and curing while other activities such as land preparation and pesticide application were observed. Based on the simple cost and return analysis the onion production in the field was unprofitable. Thus, the various problems and constrains in production were identified and analysed to have a better understanding on how onion production performs in the demonstration farm.
