Abstract

This study analyzed the effects of the constraints violations utilized by the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) in the power systems WESM defines 5 existing constraint violations naely: Contingency Constraint, Under generation/Over Generation Constraint, Base Case Constraint, Transmission Constraints Group(TCG) Constraint and Load Shedding. These constraints, when violated present risk in comprising the safety of the power system and/or the quality of the power being delivered. This study focuses on determining how each of the constraints when violated, can indeed damage the power systems. Contingency constraint and base case constraint are basically the same. However, contingency constraint is based on a hypothetical condition. The analysis in this constraint violation involves analyzing the variation in line loading during a single line outage condition. Power swings simulations are used to analyze the effect of under generation and over generation in the stability of the power system. These analyses are then the basis for understanding the effects of TCG and Load Shedding constraints.
