Abstract

Month of planting significantly affected grain yield and other yield components of two soybean cultivars. For both cultivars March planting gave the highest bean yield, followed closely by February planting at constant plant population per hectare (300,000 plants/ha) This conforms with finding from other upland field crops that, as long as moisture is not limiting, better yield can be contained in the dry months than in the wet months. Seed quality however, was reduced due to the effect of excessive moisture brought about the monsoonal rain which coincided with the ripening of the pods of the March crop.

The varietal response to month of planting was not statistically significant, although BPI-L-114 always yielded numerically higher than CES-434 and in most of the yield components studied.

Row spacing affected grain yield. Both cultivars performed best at 50cm row spacing regardless of month of planting. However, the two cultivars differed in their performance at different row spacing, BPI-L-114 produced better than CES-434 at 50 cm and 75 cm, but the latter out yielded the former at 100 cm row spacing.

The components of yield of both cultivars were influenced by month of planting and row spacing. The February, March and May planting gave higher values than those of August and September sowings. During the months with shorter day length plant height, seed weight, number of pods, nodule count, leaf area index (LAI) and pod-straw ratio were reduced when planted at wider row spacing. On the other hand, when planted in February to May it tended to give higher yield-component tha in August and September plantings specially at closer row spacing.

However, seed quality diminished due to the adverse effect of excessive moisture during the ripening and maturity stages of the crop.
