Abstract

The top-cross performance for yield and agronomic characters of ten Cuban inbreds by the College Yellow flint variety and twelve College Yellow inbreds by the Cuban Yellow Flint variety was determined and compared with the parental varieties of College Yellow Flint and cuban Yellow Flint.

An increase of yield in 11.9 to 54.9 per cent over the Cuban Yellow Flint variety was exhibited by all the topcrosses and the College Yellow flint variety; all the topcrosses, except CY 130T and CY 122T, yielded more than the College Yellow Flint variety, with increases ranging from to 23.7 percent. Only two of these, CY 121T and CY 126T, exceeded College Yellow Flint by the L.S.M.D. of 8.7 cavans at the 5% point.

Owing to the three successive severe typhoons that occurred during the wet season of 1953, which did more damage to the late-maturing variety, Cuban, Than to the College Yellow Flint, the types of combination that have been planned for the Cuban Single crosses and the College Yellow single crosses may not be desirable during the wet season as was expected, as the topcrosses consisted in all cases of combinations of germplasm from Cuban and College Yellow. A study in actual double crosses of College Yellow single x Cuban Yellow single crosses from the same material as a means of deciding the desirability inbred lines will be of great interest.

The study revealed that, in general the College Yellow appears to show more desirable agronomic characters than the Cuban.
