Abstract

The farm practice was conducted from November 2006 to May 2007 at the Philippine Rice Research Institute, Brgy Maligaya Science City Munoz, Nueva Ecija to document the various practices involved in producing F1 seeds of Mestizo 3, to acquire knowledge and skills in seed production, assess the technology and practices employed at PhilRice and make recommendations for the improvement of the production methods.

PhilRice is an institution mandated to develop and produce rice varieties for introduction to the local market. It is the leading local institute in rice research and development. Currently, PhilRice focuses on the development of hybrid rice varieties to aid rice production in the country.

The farm practice focused on the use of current technology for producing F1 seeds, using two restorer lines and a mother plant. Observations were made from the experimental field of the Seed Production and Health Division. Focus was also given to the different aspects of production scheme and assessing their suitability and effectiveness.

Problems related to the production of F1 seeds were observed. Protection against cross pollination from other rice varieties was the immediate concern. Other constraints were: insufficient sanitation scheme as well as the implementation of management procedures relation to seed production. Recommendation were identified to further improve the production scheme namely; strict implementation of management procedures, such as ensuring properly leveled fields before transplanting; effective sanitation of equipment and materials used; and putting up barriers against possible cross pollination from other rice varieties.
