Abstract

The study entitled "A Study on Food Packaging: Focus on the Laguna Food Processing Industry" was conducted to determine the current food packaging practices of the Laguna Food Processing Industry, and to identify the factors behind these practices. Specifically the objectives were 1) to determine the current practices of food packaging of the Laguna Food Processing Industry; 2) to identify the problems encountered by the said industry with regards to food packaging; and 3) to come up with appropriate recommendations that will address the problems of food processors surveyed. The study was conducted in the selected towns in Laguna namely: Alaminos, Calamba, Los Baños, Pila, San Pablo, and Sta. Cruz. Primary data were collected through interviews with an aid of an interview schedule. There were 27 food processors interviewed. The list of food processors were obtained from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Laguna in San Pablo City, and from the various Special Problems about the Laguna Food processors Industry that were previously conducted. Relevant secondary data were gathered from various institutions. A problem encountered by food processors with regards to packaging is the expensiveness and continuing increase of its price. Another problem being faced by the processors is inadequate supply, which was very common for glass bottles used by the fruits and vegetable processors. It has been found out that one factor which caused this was the poor production scheduling on the part of the processors. This was also accompanied by competition in acquiring packaging materials. Some had a problem about quality and a few were bothered by the manufacturer's poor services. Lastly, the food processors had a problem with regards to the association to which they belonged. From the problems pointed out, the following recommendation were derived: For Food Processors: they should be willing to collectively address their common problems. There is also a need for them to be united and help from of a strong association. This association should be led by the procurement of packaging materials. Also, should be included in the program. For the Department of Trade and Industry, and Product Development and Design Center of the Philippines: they should continue to extend their services to the food processors, specially with regards to the new trends in design and packaging. DTI should help the organization, should the processors form one, in setting the standard packaging materials to be used. For the manufacturers: they should conduct researches (R and D) to answer the needs of the food processors. with this, quality of their packaging products will improve as well as their services.
