Abstract

The case study documents and analyzes the operations of L.U. Gonzales Farm, an orchard located in Candelaria Quezon. Primary on the orchard were gathered through interviews with the owner and workers of the farm. Secondary data were taken from existing literature and documents from a number of government agencies namely, the municipality of Candelaria, the Municipal Office of the Department of Agriculture in Candelaria and the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics. The main objectives of the study were to present and analyze the management and operations of the L.U. Gonzales Orchard. The specific objectives of the study were to: 1) present the historical background and profile of the L.U. Gonzales Orchard. 2) analyze the relevant elements of the business environment of the orchard; 3) asses the farm in terms of the four business functions; 4) identify and analyze the major issues and problems faced by the farm; 5) generate and evaluate alternative solutions to the identified problem; and 6) identify the best solution and design and implementation plan for the chosen solution. The L.U. Gonzales Orchard is a family-owned business in Barangay Masalukot Uno, Candelaria Quezon. It has a total area of seven hectares, planted mostly with the Maharlika variety of rambutan tree. Other fruit trees such as chico, santol, mango, citrus, lanzones and papaya are intercropped with the rambutan. The farm also maintains a nursery that offers a variety of grafted seedlings like rambutan and mangosteen seedlings. The farm is the largest rambutan grower in Candelaria in terms of fruit bearing trees. It is also the third largest citrus grower in the municipality in terms of number of fruit bearing trees as well as being the third largest high value fruit crop orchard in terms of farm area.
