Abstract

The differences among the rows were significant. Plants in the row bordering the unplanted alley gave the highest yield of filled grains; the middle row, the lowest. The difference in yield between plants of the terminal segments and those at the inner segments was not significant.

Compared to inner plants, border plants headed late. Plants in the border rows were significantly taller than those in the middle rows. The number of productive tillers was dependent on additional space provided by the unplanted alley. Border plants produced significantly more tillers than inner plants.

Lodging proved to be a varietal characteristics; border plants lodged as much as the inner plants.
