Abstract

Soaking husks in chemical solutions increased fiber yield. No significant differences between the chemicals used (sodium hydroxide, sodium sulfate, sodium carbonate and sodium chloride) was obtained in tensile strength and stretch of the coconut fibers.

In general, soaking the husks in the various chemical solutions resulted in weaker and less hustrous fibers.

The best chemical found among the chemical solutions tried was sodium hydroxide.
