Abstract

A field study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of postemergence interrow cultivation, use of herbicides and combination of herbicides with interrow cultivation for weed control in cotton.

All of the herbicides were slightly phytotoxic to cotton 15 days after emergence with linuron being the most phytotoxic. However, the cotton plots recovered from the injury. Weed counts and weed weights 30 DAE showed that the herbicides significantly reduced weed density and biomass compared with the unweeded check. Hoeing 2-4 weeks after emergence and handweeding alone provided satisfactory control.

Boll weight and seedcotton yield of plants which received postmergence interrow cultivation were comparable with those treatments with diuron and linuron applied alone, and floumeturon, trifluralin and prometryne in combination with postemergence interrow cultivation. Yields from all herbicides treated plants were significantly higher than the unweeded and handweeded plants.

Results suggests that higher yield and better weed control could be obtained when herbicides was used in combination with postemergence interrow cultivation.
