Abstract

In its efforts to help marginalized farmers in Samar and Leyte, the Institute of Alternative Development Approaches (IADA) aimed to promote sustainable agriculture, by setting-up of the Dagami Agricultural Laboratory and Resource Center (DALaRC). DALaRC serves as the venue for seminars on suitable agriculture and showcases several technological options under the framework of sustainable agriculture. With the active participation of the student-researcher and inputs from the farmers, a diversified and integrated farming system was developed. The system includes various components such as the vegetable garden, wood lot, intensive feed garden, goal loafing area, cattle exercise area, goal and cattle housing, mini-forest, cash crop area, genetic resource conservation area, hog raising and breeding area, poultry housing, fishponds, area for practicum and nursery and their interactions.

The full completion of DALaRC and full implementation of its activities is an opportunity to promote options for diversification in the communities which are almost solely dependent on coconut. Through its learning laboratory, technology options can be adopted to the conditions obtained in the community.

The support of local government units and the community, linkage with the University of the Philippines at Los Baños and dedicated staff are positive opportunities for the IADA to achieve its aim. But as a center which is just starting, the constraints identified are the lack of technical background by the staff, absence of full time training staff and lack of funds to complete the center and the learning laboratory.
