Abstract

The meiotic behavior of pureline IR43 (DHO), its second cycle anther culture derived - doubled haploid lines (DH2) and their F1 hybrids (DHO x DH2) was studied.

All the lines have the normal chromosome number of 2n = 24. chromosome pairing at pachytene in DH2 and DH0 x DH2 was normal as in DH0. Terminal and intercalary loose pairings were observed at low frequencies in DH0. DH2-1, DH2-4, DH2-5 and DH0 x DH2-5. Other chromosome abnormalities noted at low frequencies were early disjunction of bivalents at diakinesis and metaphase I, non-congression of bivalents at metaphase I, early chromosome division at anaphase I and laggards at anaphase I and telophase I.

Meiotic abnormalities noted in DH2 and DH0 x DH2 were of the same types and frequencies as those observed in DH0. No gross chromosomal aberration was noted that could account for the wide variations among doubled haploids. Cytological observations suggests that morphological variations among doubled haploids may be due to gene mutation or any other minute aberration that may not be detectable within the limits of conventional light microscopy.
