Abstract
The chromosome number of Euphorbia hirta was determined employing the acetocarmine squash technique. The mitotic and meiotic chromosomal behavior of this species were analyzed and correlated with its pollen fertility. Normal chromosome behavior was observed in all stages of mitosis. The chromosome number of Euphorbta hirta was confirmed to be n=9, 2n=18. Relatively low frequency of normal pairing and high frequency of univalent formation was observed at diakinesis. Other stages at meiosis exhibited high frequencies of normal chromosome behavior while laggard formation and non-congression at metaphase I and anaphase I occurred at low frequencies. The normal chromosome behavior at meiosis resulted in the high percentage of pollen fertility (90.3%) observed.
