Abstract
It was found that the spacing giving 44,444 plants per hectare gave higher sugar yield than the spacing giving 22,222 plants per hectare. Difference in sugar yield was entirely due to difference in tonnage. more were no differences in quality ratios as affected by variety or spacing. Of the tonnage yield components, the number of millable stalks per hill was most sensitive to population stress. Only varietal effects were detected on the stalk length, stalk diameter and individual stalk weight. Stalk weight per hill was significantly affected by population and no varietal effect was detected. In general, more stalks and heavier stalk weight per hill were detected in wide spacing. Despite this however, tonnage were higher under close spacing. This means that population effects on tonnage yield component were not significant enough to offset the advantage of having sore stalks per unit area in the narrow spacing. There is an indication that , some varieties, i.e. CAC 58-360 are sore tolerant to narrow spacing.
