Abstract

The farm practice was conducted in the Municipality of Baao, Camarines Sur from April to May 2009. the study aimed to document and to analyze various farming systems and cultural practices that farmers employ in their production and assess their sustainability, recommend activities or practices that will improve the current farming system and provide source data for the development of the community. The bio-physical, socio-economic, and political aspects of the community was assessed to identify the problems, constraints, and potentials to improve the agricultural production of the community. The residents of Baao, Camarines Sur are mostly farmers. After rice, the residents commonly grow corn and vegetables. The study also showed that many organizations in the community like RinCOMESA, PRRM, and Go Organic Philippines provide seminars and trainings towards sustainable agriculture. However, farmers are still using chemical inputs to increase yield. the identified major factors that affect the farmer's production are the use of available resources, intervention of government and non-government organizations, inadequate education and poor quality of farm to market roads. It was recommended that the respondents use composting and green manure to decrease the cost of their inputs. Because of the level of their potassium is generally low, it was recommended that the farmer respondents use organic potash fertilizers. Increasing the crop diversity by practicing bio-intensive gardening is also suggested to increase the maximization of the land and the income.
