Abstract

Plant-progeny rows of C4-63 and C4-28 College rice varieties were grown, uniform lines selected and then evaluated in a performance test conducted during the 1967 cropping seasons to determine the most promising lines.

C4-63 lines differed significantly only in sowing to heading duration and grain yield. None, however, yielded higher than the variety mean. They had essentially the same plant height, productive tillers, top weight, and harvest index.

In C4-28, line 85 had the shortest growth duration while lines 58 and 155 had the highest harvest index. All lines had about the same grain yield, number of productive tillers and top weight.

Statistical analyses revealed that grain yield is independent of growth duration and plant height; on the other hand, it is directly related to number of productive tillers, top weight and harvest index of both varieties in the absence of lodging the data indicate that selection would be more effective for growth duration in both varieties, for plant height and harvest index in C4-28 and for yielding ability in C4-63.
