Abstract
Leaves were longer, broader and more drooping in the wet than in the dry season. Length, width and angle of inclination of the leaves at seedling stage generally increased from leaf no. 1 to leaf no. 3 in both seasons except for leaf angle which decreased in SA3. Leaf length and angle of inclination of the leaves at maturity increased from leaf no. 1 to leaf no. 2 while leaf width followed the opposite trend. Plants were generally taller, had longer panicle, headed earlier, and heavier grains in the wet season. However, grain straw ratio was higher in the dry season.
More leaf characters at the seedling stage, were closely associated in the wet than the dry season. Leaf characters at the seedling stage did not have a direct influence on leaf characters at maturity. Furthermore, correlations of leaf characters at the seedling stage with seedling height and plant characters at maturity varied considerably with the season.
Leaf characters at maturity seemed more closely associated in the wet than in the dry season. In both seasons, leaf characters at maturity affected considerably plant characters at maturity although higher correlation values were observed in the wet season.
Plants with longer leaves were generally taller, had longer period from sowing to heading, longer panicles and heavier grains. Leaf characters at maturity showed an inverse relationship with grain-straw ratio.
For all important seedling and mature plant characters studied, these findings suggest that selection for desirable plant characters is more effective if done during the wet season planting.
