Abstract

Fourteen breeding records complete up to the fifth farrowing from the Esperanza Stock Farm, Calamba, Laguna, and sixteen records complete up to the second farrowing from the NSDB swine herd in the Department of Animal Husbandry were used in this study. This work was undertaken to determine how average litter size and average pig weight at birth and at 42-day weaning behave with repeated farrowing. Repeatability values of the aforementioned traits and the length of farrowing intervals were also determine.

The results indicated that in general, reproductive efficiency of the sows studied was at its peak during the fourth farrowing. Average litter size and average pig weight at birth and at 42-day weaning were highest at this stage. First farrowing interval averaged 202.4 days for the landrace breed and their crosses, and 207.8 days for the native strains and their crosses.

The trait found to have the highest repeatability was average pig weight at birth. It was observed that repeatability values differed from herd to herd, and with repeated farrowings.
