Abstract

The major farm practice was conducted at Sunjin Genetics Farm from April 24 to May 25, 2008. This allowed the students to apply the knowledge they have gained in the University and be able to have hands-on experience in the actual swine farm operations. As of May 2008, the farm was operating at 600 sow level with an animal population of 6,894. The breeds of pigs in the farm include Landrace, Large White, Pietrain, Duroc, and Duroc Pietrain. The animal are housed in 29 buildings composed of 12 grower houses, 4 farrowing houses, 4 gestating houses, 5 nursery houses, a hospital house, gilt house, boar house, and a house for dry sows and hilts. The students were allowed to perform several daily activities in the farm such as heat detection, semen collection, semen evaluation and processing, artificial insemination, pregnancy testing, assisting farrowing sows, cutting of needle teeth and umbilical cord, ear notching, ear tattooing, tail docking, castration, assisting in medication and vaccination, feeding of animals cleaning and disinfection of pens, and record keeping. This also allowed the student to come up with observations, evaluations, analysis and recommendations to the problems encountered in the farm.
