Abstract
ADSIA Logistics Inc. is an outsourced company by Del Monte Philippines. It provides a third party logistics for its clients. It focuses on the physical storage and distribution of the products of its customer/s. and delivers them to more than a hundred outlets located within the country. Due to varying schedule of incoming and outgoing movement of Del Monte products, the ADSIA Logistics' Industrial Engineering department planned to apply a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) operation last July 2009. this operation automated the allocation and relocation on the pallet positions of the products or goods inside warehouse A. To comply with the requirement of RFID, replenishment and put away operations of the company was effectively organized and well maintained for its efficiency. The study aimed to reduce the amount of goods contained in the trucks that pile up during semi peak and peak periods. During these periods, only two- drive-in forklifts were readily available. The main objective was to reduce the excessive stacking up of goods in the warehouse that leads top frequent overtime of the employees. In order to analyze the system, time study was conducted regarding put away the replenishment operations. The study was conducted following several constraints. These constraints included the following: the study was conducted in 8AM to 5PM shift, the data gathered did not include the peak periods, and time study focused only with the existing forklift and jack lift in the system. As the study progressed, several problems came up and most of them pointed out and confirmed the problem regarding excessive pile up of trucks and their long waiting time in the premises of the warehouse. As the problem detected, the operations involved in the system as the basis of the evaluations for the alternatives. Several alternatives were analyzed addressing the problem regarding increased capacity and excessive piling up of goods in the system. These alternatives included adding extra forklift in the workstation, adding dock levelers, and maintaining the current system. The analyses showed that the system will need additional set of machines. Accompanying the extra machine are the additional forklift operator and helper that will operate the machine. The additional unit will reduce excessive pile of goods by 12%, moreover, reducing the overtime spent by the workers in the system by 0.45 hours or 27 minutes. In addition to these, a monetary benefit of Php1,059,619.78 can be achieved in the reduced overtime, doubled the cost needed for the solution.
