Abstract

The study covered 38 retailers in the Los Baños retail markets. The retailers were 37 years of age on the average. Majority of the retailers have reached high school level education. They have been operating their present business for 10.5 years on the average. Fourteen and 25 percent of the fish and vegetable retailers respectively, had no formal schooling.

In market retailing, the total costs incurred by a meat retailer, was 11 times higher than that incurred by a vegetable retailer, twice that of the fish and grocery retailer and four times higher than a food stall retailer. The net returns of the meat retailer was 10 times higher than a vegetable retailer and three times higher than a cereal and fish retailers. The generated net returns for grocery and dry goods, on the other hand, are twice as that of cereals.
