Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at the Central Experiment Station, U. P. at Los Baños College of Agriculture from May 1972 to March 1973, to evaluate the retooning capacity of seven grain sorghum varieties grown in three levels of plant population density and nitrogen fertilizer.

The retooning capacity of the different grain sorghum varieties expressed in terms of the production of productive retoons and grain yield was greatly affected by diseases. The results thus stress the importance of growing disease resistant varieties if there is any intention of retooning a sorghum crop.

Population density at seeding influenced number of productive ratoons, panicle length and number of grains per panicle. When population density was increased from 120, 000 to 280,000 plt/ha. Panicle length and number of grains per panicle decreased. Nitrogen fertilization of 100 kg N/ha appeared to be optimum for the seed and ratoon crops in terms of productive ratoons, grain number per panicle and panicle length. In condition, days to blooming was 10 days earlier when 100 kg N/ha was supplied compared with nitrogen fertilizer.

The ability of cosor 3 to perform better than Cosor 2 at higher plant population densities could be due in part to the more erect leaf orientation of the former. Cosor 3 cut performed Cosor 2 both in production of productive ratoons and grain yield as the plant population density increased from 120,000 plt/ha to 280 plt/ha. Cosor 2 performed best at 120,000 plt/ha.
