Abstract

The capture, release and recapture technique of estimating useful population parameters was explained using, JollY's stochastic model with an example. A program (FORTRAN) for the IBM 1620 was also developed to facilitate the computations of the different estimation equations. It was observed that the assumed value of the initial population size (N1) affected the standard errors of the estimates. (N1) only and not the values of the estimates themselves, an increase in population size did not always denote a corresponding increase in the number of new individuals in the population and vice versa due to the varying probabilities of survival between samplings.
