Abstract

A survey coupled with personal interviews, was conducted in seven (7) high schools, four (4) public and three (3) private in Los Baños, Laguna namely Barangay National High School, College of Fisheries, Community High School, UP Rural High School, Christian School International (CSI), Los Baños Science School (LBSS) and Liceo de Los Baños. These schools are composed of 27 mathematics teachers with eight (8) also teaching Trigonometry. Only two (2) of the 27 teachers teach only Trigonometry.

Out of the four (4) public schools mentioned above, three (3) follow the new Secondary Education Development Program (SEDP) curriculum for mathematics prescribed by the Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS). The UP Rural High School which is a public school follows the Revised Secondary Curriculum (RSE) so with CSI and LBSS. The Liceo de Los Baños, a private institution uses the SEDP.

The study attempted to find out if the necessary pre-requisite knowledge and skills in mathematics particularly in algebra and Trigonometry were sufficient provided for by the different schools involved in this study to determine the readiness of the student-respondents for Math 17.

Considering that the prescribed topics for coverage for the year were not all discussed/covered except by one (1) public school, bolstered by the average level of attainment of conceptual knowledge and the inability of students to see relationships, the findings showed the inadequacy of knowledge and skills in Algebra and Trigonometry indicating the unpreparedness of the high school students in six (6) out of the seven (7) schools involved in this study.
