Issue Date

Abstract

One hundred randomly selected resettled residents in Anislag resettlement site in Daraga, Albay, Philippines were interviewed regarding their experiences and responses to typhoon Reming in November 2006. The respondents were among 782 families from the affected barangays in Daraga who lost their homes, properties, livelihood while a few of them had family members who died in the disaster due to flashfloods and mudflows coming from the slopes of Mayon Volcano. From the 100 families surveyed, selected case studies were done to gather in-depth information on the efficient response strategies and decision making processes of the affected households. As the people evacuated to avoid danger from mudflows, most of the respondents showed remarkable composure even if they had no previous experience with disaster. In disaster situation, Filipinos depend on social support system. The neighbors and relatives gave immediate assistance in the form of warnings and temporary accommodations. Government officials (GOs) from the barangay to the provincial level provided the evacuation shelters while non-government organizations (NGOs) supplied. ©Rushing Water Publishers Ltd. 2011.
