A bioprocess of producing a simple preparation of tylosin for use as feed additive

Abstract

A bioprocess for the production of a simple preparation of tylosin through the use of an improved strain of Streptomyces fradiae SF93 was developed. From a soil stock culture, the organism was allowed to sporulate on tryptic soy agar (TSA) followed by vegetative growth on tryptic soy broth prior to inoculation on a developed simplified medium. Fermentation was done for 5 d at 28 C and the resulting culture broth including cells was vacuum-dried at 60 C for 2 h with a final drying phase in the oven at 60 C for 24 h. The resulting flakes were pulverized, packed in plastic bags and assayed for tylosin concentration. Toxicity studies showed that the viability of embryos was not significantly affected by the tylosin preparation nor by SF93 water and oil extracts. Based on two feeding trials in poultry at amounts equivalent to Tylan 100® using 250 g of a simple form of tylosin per ton feed, the broilers showed significantly higher body weight gain and better feed efficiency than the control (without antibiotic) but the values were not significantly different from those of the chicks fed with the expensive commercially available imported tylosin.
