Phytase production by an improved strain of Aspergillus ficuum NRRL 3135 and its application in broiler feeds

Abstract

From the 1st to the 8th day of fermentation, the improved strain of Aspergillus ficuum NRRL 3135 produced phytase with the maximum enzyme production on the 5th day. Rice bran was used as substrate. Phytase production increased as glucose in the medium was depleted. The optimum enzyme activity was observed at 30 - 55 C. No relationship between pH of the medium and phytase production was observed. Based on the results of feeding studies, there was a significant increase in apparent-digestibility of phosphorus (21.45% to 42.92%) and calcium (55.99% to 72.03%) in broilers fed with 135 U crude phytase per gram of feed. This means more phosphorus and calcium are absorbed from the feeds and less are excreted with the manure. This could have two-fold benefits: first, a reduction in the use of inorganic phosphorus and calcium supplements in broiler diets, consequently reducing the cost of feed and, second, less phosphorus excretion in the manure, thereby, lessening pollution due to phosphate compounds.
