Evaluation of the Youth Research Apprenticeship Program (YRAP)

Abstract

The 3-year (1994-1996) performance of the Youth Research Apprenticeship Program (YRAP) which introduced and exposed 92 selected high school students to various fields of science and technology was evaluated. The participants' socio-demographic characterization revealed that majority of the participants (55-70%) were males, the mean age was 16 years old, mostly first-born children, majority of the participants' mothers were teachers while the fathers were commonly government and private employees. The participants belonged to middle-class families and were mostly students of national high schools in the country. The 1995-1996 YRAP participants assessed that all of the objectives of the program were attained. Thus, the 2-year implementations were complete successes. The overall coordination of YRAP activities was evaluated to be adequate and the coordinators were given favorable assessments. There was significant improvement in the YRAP research activities from 1994 to 1996 as shown by the rising trend of participants' positive responses. Lectures were assessed to be moderate in relevance and effectiveness. Field trips were reported to be really important. The participants made some recommendations/suggestions for the further improvement of the YRAP program.
