Note: Typhoon Rosing's damage to mango in two orchards in Laguna, Philippines
Abstract
Typhoon Rosing devastated 2 mango orchards with grafted 3- to 18-yr-old trees in Sta. Filomena, San Pablo City and at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, College, Laguna, Philippines on 3 November 1995. It blew down nearly 80% of 9-yr-old 'Carabao' mangoes in Sta. Filomena where trees that escaped bending showed very slight or slight defoliation of leaves. Uprooting ranged from very slight to very heavy and 40% of trees experienced the latter. In Los Baños 57% of 18-yr-old trees were split and snapped, some with very large trunks (119 cm girth) and branches (93 cm girth), indicating the strength of Rosing which the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) estimated to have sustained winds of 225 km/h. Damage to 3-yr-old grafted 'Carabao' mango was only very slight to moderate and limited to tree bending.
