Response of some tropical and subtropical fruits to Pre- and Post- Harvest applications of Ethephon

Abstract

Ethephon, through an ethylene mechanism, is a very effective ripening, degreening and flowering agent for some banana, citrus, fig and pineapple cvs. The practical application of ethephon as an abscission and flowering agent for citrus fruits and mango, respectively, are limited by its abscission effect on leaves. The abscission and ripening responses of grape flowers and fruits appear variable. Ethephon promotes a uniform rate of preharvest maturation and ripening which makes it a potentially useful chemical for crops intended for mechanical harvesting. © 1976 The New York Botanical Garden.
