Modified vacuum sampler for arthropods for monitoring non-target organisms in Bt-corn fields and other biodiversity studies

Issue Date

Abstract

In a previous study (Lit et al. 2011 & 2012) on non-target organisms in regulated field trials for Bt corn hybrids MON89034 and MON89034/NK603, several sampling methods were used to collect arthropods. These methods were later compared and subjected to further statistical analyses to assess their efficiency and effectiveness (Lit et al. in press). In the said paper, efficiency of a method was interpreted as the number of individuals collected whereas effectiveness referred to the number of species detected. The definitions have been adopted from previous sampling studies for cave arthropods like those of Weinstein & Slaney (1995) and Encinares & Lit (2014). Among the methods used in the studies of Lit et al. (2011 et seq.), the vacuum sampler was fabricated as an alternative to the more expensive commercially available suction or vacuum samplers like DVAC (Dietrick et al. 1960). The inclusion of a vacuum sampler was also an answer to the search for sampling methods that would allow collection of great numbers of individuals and species even in agroecosystems in the Philippines, the country being a region of megadiversity (Mittermeier et al. 1997).
