Abstract

Outbreak of the Coconut Scale Insect (CSI) Aspidiotus sp. (Diaspididae, Hemiptera) outbreak remains unabated and continues to be a threat to the coconut industry despite the mitigating measures done by concerned government agencies. Occurrences and severity of infestations of CSI in four locations in the neighboring towns of Calauan (1 site) and San Pablo (2 sites) in Laguna and Tiaong (1 site) in Quezon [Philippines], representing contrasting topographies and cropping systems, were documented and compared. Bio-efficacy evaluation of systematic neocinotinoid insecticides and monitoring CSI natural enemies were conducted in one of the sites. The study was made possible through the initiative and assistance from the land owner of the coconut farms in all the study sites. Differences in occurrence and severity of infestations were observed between sites that can be attributed in part, to topography and cropping system. All neonicotinoids were more effective than Cochin-dish washing liquid combination. Among the different delivery systems tested for neonicotinoids, trunk injection is more effective than crown drenching while soil drenching, was comparable with the untreated control. A black encyrtid was found attacking A. rigidus in the experimental site. Follow up observations in Los Baños, Bay and Calauan showed that the parasitoid was already causing as high as 80% parasitization rate. Six Arecaceae (red palm, blue palm, queens' palm, manila palm, palmera and oil palm), one Clusiaceae (Mangosteen), one Musaceae (banana), and one Anonaceae (anonas) were documented as potential alternate hosts of A. rigidus. Differential reaction between tall and dwarf varieties of coconuts was also observed with the latter showing less tolerance to A. rigidus infestation.
