Abstract

A field experiment was conducted in 2 location sites in Agusan Del Norte from July 2012 to June 2013 to validate the efficiency of egg parasitoid Trichogramma japonicum Ashmead, against white stem borer (WSB) Scirpophaga innotata Walker population. Monitoring of the natural enemies showed beneficial organisms that include coccinellid beetle, damselflies, ground beetle, spiders and different species of parasitic wasps. One to 2 field releases of T. japonicum at the rate of 5 g/ha (180,000 adults/ha) started from panicle initiation to booting stage of the rice crop resulted in 52-71% increase in egg parasitism from 16.86% to 35.66% due to T. japonicum on rice variety NSIC RC160 during July to December 2012 and 8.86% to 1.46% on PSB Rc82 during January to June 2013 cropping season with 2.1 to 3.5-field increase in egg parasitism. The release of T. japonicum on NSIC RC160 and PSB RC82 resulted in lower damage of 0.89% and 10.31% and yields of 3.82 tons/ha and 4.40 ton/ha, respectively. In contrast, fields not released with T. japonicum had 5.68% and 18.18% whiteheads and yield of 3.68 tons/ha and 2.65 tons/ha, respectively. The WSB eggs were parasitized by three egg parasitoid species, namely: Trichogramma japonicum Ashmead, Telenomus rowani (Gahan), and Tetrastichus schoenobii Ferriere. Out of 100 egg masses sampled, 92% were parasitized, with 75.57% egg parasitism/eggmass.
