Abstract
Adult chironomid midges (Diptera:Chironomidae) collected in 2003 from emergence traps along Taugad River, Brgy. San Vicente, Oriental Mindoro, were to be infected by nematodes of the family Mermithidae. The specimens were originally preserved in glycerol before placing in ethanol. One adult worm was observed in coiled position in the abdomen of each host, while some post-parasitic individuals managed to emerge by rupturing the abdomen. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a nematode of chironomids in the Philippines. Some mermithids also cause morphological and sexual abnormalities in their hosts. Structural alterations of adult males such as atennal length, appearance of antenna and number of flagellomeres, 8th abdominal segment and genitalia as well as nucleotide sequence of the nuclear fragments ribosomal DNA 18s will be reported.
