Improving the grain filling and yield of indica rice through kinetin (N⁶- furfuryl adenine) application at flowering stage

Abstract
Pot and field experiments were conducted from September 2008 to May 2009 at the University of the Philippines at Los Baños, College, Laguna, Philippines to determine the effect of kinetin (N⁶- furfuryl adenine) application at flowering stage on the grain filling and yield of PSB Rc28 (short-duration variety) and PSB Rc18 (medium-duration variety). Based on optimization set-up, kinetin concentration of 50 mg L‾¹, at spray volume of 400 L ha-¹, applied at the onset of flowering was found to be the optimum combination to improve grain filling and grain yield. Kinetin application to both varieties increased chlorophyll content at later stage of crop development resulting to more assimilates diverted to the grains. Under field condition, the percent filled spikelets of PSB Rc28 was increased by 0.9 % to a yield increase of 10.9% (500 kg ha‾¹) compared to the control (with fertilizer but no kinetin application) which had a base yield of 4600 kg ha‾¹. On the other hand, the percent filled spikelets in PSB Rc18 which was increased by 3.1% and the 1000-grain weight by 4.1%, translated to a yield increase of 17.8% (800 kg ha‾¹) compared to 4500 kg ha ‾¹ of the control. Exogenous application of kinetin offers an opportunity in increasing the rice yield of medium or late duration varieties which generally produce high yield containers.
