Abstract

The ovicidal and larvicidal activities of the crude extracts and ground materials from psychic nut, Jatropha curcas L. and black pepper, Piper nigrum L. were determined against eggs and larvae of dengue mosquito, Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) in the laboratory. The order pf decreasing ovicidal toxicity of the plant materials against A. aegypti is: black pepper ethanolic extract (BPEE) + 2% Vanilla = BPEE > ground black pepper (GBP) + 2% Vanilla > GBP > jatropa petroleum ether extract (JPEE) + 2% Vanilla > JPEE while the order pf decreasing toxicity of the plant materials against A. aegypti larvae both for 24 and 48 h are as follows: BPEE + 2% Vanilla > BPEE > GBP + 2% Vanilla > JPEE + 2% Vanilla = JPEE + GBP. Based on the ovicidal and larvicidal activities, BPEE is the most toxic against A. aegypti. The addition of 2% Vanilla is ground materials and plant extracts significantly increased the toxicity of the test materials against dengue mosquito. Results are quite promising since both black pepper and vanilla are safe and locally available.
