Abstract

Extrusion of Halictophagus fulmeki (Hofeneder) and Callipharixenos philippines Kathirithamby & McMahon in superparasitized and multiparasitized mango leafhoppers collected in 2013 were examined, dissected and documented as photographs. The location, length and width of the extrusions, and the number of eggs in the ovisacs of the female parasitoids were determined and analyzed statistically. A maximum of three extrusions were found on I. clypealis while a maximum of four extrusions were found in I. niveosparsus. This suggests that size of the host has influence on the number of extrusions that it can support. The most common location of the extrusion in the three species of hoppers is between tergites 4-5 for the cephalotheca and between sternites 4-5 for the cephalothorax, which is the widest area of the host abdomen. This is observed in both monoparasitized and superparasitized hoppers. Minor extrusion sites or aberrant sites, according to some authors, were segments 3-4, 5-6 and 2-3. Superparasitism in I. clypealis slightly reduced the size of the cephalothorax, particularly the ovisacs, but not the size of the cephalotheca. In H. fulmeki, the reduction is ca. 50% or higher. In C. philippines, egg count reduction is ca. 70%. But, the total egg count of the superparasitized ovisacs per host appears the same or even higher than of the monoparasitized host. The significance of these findings needs further study.
