Insect pests of guapple (Psidium guajava Linn) and their control
Issue Date

Abstract
A study on insect pests of guapple and their control was carried out at the Guapple Plantation at RAC-CBSUA from April to July 2011. Three majors insect pests were observed namely: a pyralid, Helopeltis sp. and fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis. To control Helopeltis were insecticides used and all except Cypermethrin were found effective in reducing bug populations. For the control of fruit fly, plastic materials of different colors and different types of wrappers were evaluated. Reduction inf fruit fly damage was observed when white plastic + pattern paper and wax paper, and polyethylene bags were used. More marketable fruits were found in polyethylene + newspaper and white plastic + wax paper. Heavier fruits were found those bagged using white + newspaper and white plastic + wax paper and less incidence of anthracnose in fruits bagged in yellow plastic + wax paper and polyethylene + newspaper. Polyethylene bags, white and yellow plastic wrapped by newspaper had fruits protected from bird damage. Based on the sensory evaluation, the color, crispiness and sweetness of fruits was affected by the type of bagging material used.
