Abstract

Influence of temperature and relative humidity on egg load, longevity and progeny production of Trichogramma evanescence (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), an egg parasitoid of Asian corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee)), was investigated. The reproductive status, lifetime productivity and performance of Trichogramma evanescence under cyclically varying levels of temperature and relative humidity and combination of Biological Control Laboratory of the Crop Protection Cluster - National Crop Protection Center, UP Los Bańos. Assessments were made from individual wasps exposed to varying sets of environmental variables with corn borer eggs as the host. A set of rice moth eggs, the factitious host, represents the standard response of the parasitoid wasps and was used for comparison. In the laboratory T. evanescence lifespan was significantly shortened by hot temperature (32°C) from seven days maximum to one day. Potential fecundity (mature ovarian eggs), adult longevity as well as lifetime productivity were significantly higher at temperature of 27°C and 29°C. Female wasps exposed to temperature below 29°C produced male biased sex ratio, increasing the temperature to 32°C resulted in female biased sex ratio. Adult wasps lived for a maximum of two days under dry (12%RH) and humid (75%RH) conditions that resulted in reduced lifetime fecundity. The combined effect of temperature and relative humidity also reduced adult survival to two days and resulted in a low reproductive output of the wasps.
