Pest dynamics on sweet sorghum in Laguna

Issue Date

10-2011

Abstract

Two sweet sorghum croppings were observed for insect pest and natural enemy occurrence to establish the pest dynamics on sweet sorghum in Laguna. A total of eight insect pests and three natural enemies were listed. Similar pest complexes were noted on the plantings. However, for some species, there were differences in occurrence and density relative to the growth stage of the host plant. Asian corn borer (ACB) was identified as a major insect pest as it bores and tunnels the stalk, the economically important part of this promising feedstock crop. Confirmatory studies are recommended to fully establish the insect pest dynamics on the crop under given environmental conditions. Data generated from such study cans serve as the basis for a sound and sustained insect pest management in sweet sorghum.
