Conservation status of indigenous trees in argao river watershed reserve, Cebu Island, Philippines
Issue Date

Abstract
A rapid assessment on the conservation status of encountered tree species in the Argao River Watershed Reserve (ARWR) study site using Guarino and Rao (1995) and subsequent results are compared with what would have been the results in case other yardsticks are used, namely, IUCN (2010) and Fernando et al. (2008). A total of 18 families, 27 genera and 32 taxa have been encountered and identified. Five taxa were categorized as Endangered (EN) while 28 taxa were categorized as Vulnerable (VU). All of the indigenous tree species recorded during the expedition are classified under threatened categories because the whole watershed especially where the sampling was done is exposed to continued forest destruction and degradation; hence, some species are becoming sparsely distributed. The present information on the conservation status of indigenous trees in Argao River Watershed Reserve will be an indispensable tool for the local policy-decision makers in their effort to design alternative solutions that will improve biodiversity protection and conservation of the entire watershed. © Rushing Water Publishers Ltd. 2011.
